As usual, I’m late wishing everyone a happy and safe Thanksgiving holiday. I hope you all ate to your heart’s content.
I attended a dinner held at my brother’s in laws… I think it’s been 4 years now that my family has trekked up the hill to feast with their family. Always a fun bunch.
25ish people + 3 long tables + 2 turkeys = a lot of fat happy stomachs
Because I enjoy the “leftover” part of Thanksgiving, I came home to cook up a turkey breast, green bean casserole, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie and Auntie Pam’s sweet potatoes (not my Auntie Pam, Lolo’s (my sil) Auntie Pam).
I took the Pioneer Woman’s suggestion of buying William Sonoma’s spiced brine for my turkey breast. Except that they were completely sold out by the time I got over to WS. Drat. However, one of the many salespeople in the shop told me that another customer came through WS and stated Whole Foods carried the same thing. So I tromped across the parking lot to WF and picked up a jar for myself. The WF version is NOT the same as the WS version. At all. But since it was my only last minute option, I chose it.
As I type, my nicely brined turkey breast is roasting away. At 8am in the morning. On a Sunday. Really, what AM I doing up so early????
My dogs are the reason. Having two golden retreivers that are so stuck on their daily routine is maddening sometimes. On the weekends for instance. Or on a holiday day off. They are used to getting up at 5:30a.m. no matter what the season. So yesterday morning, when they licked my face and shook their jingle bell collars at me, I had no choice but to crawl out of the cave of blankets I call my bed and do something productive. Like let them outside to pee. We played. Then I fed them.
Once the dogs were happy and I was completely awake, I decided to “organize” my guest bedroom. For the last few months, the guest bedroom has been a black hole for all things yarny and undecipherable. The door just barely made it open for me to toss in another WIP as I “organized” the living room.
So yesterday was the day I dove in with Rubbermaid tubs and cleaned it up. Now, all of my yarn is stacked in the closet, in the dresser and next to the dresser. I think it’s time to go on a yarn diet. Because I still have yarn in a few baskets in the living, I think I have plenty of yarn to last me through my own grandchildren.
This morning, when the dogs jingled at me, I got up, let them out and then promptly threw them into the bathroom for a good bath. Okay, “threw” is figurative because Sam weighs 80 pounds and there’s no way I can throw 80 pounds of dog and fur. While Sam did make a good attempt at climbing in himself, I lifted his back end in. I think the dynamics of the tub creates confusion in his brain.
One dog washed and semi-dried, another one lifted prone into the tub until her fur squeaked as well. Jessie did much better this go round. She only sat down once and even wagged her tail once. That’s progress!
With the dogs clean and rolling on the freshly vacuumed carpet, I made my way into the kitchen to rinse off my brined turkey breast. Rinse rinse rinse and into the oven. It smells really good and I cannot wait to make a brie, apple, cranberry sauce and turkey quesadilla – doesn’t that sound delicious???? It just came to me.
And here I sit, writing the longest blog post that I’ve written in a long time, wired on Earl Grey loose leaf tea and insomnia. I do not know why I’ve been so productive these last few mornings. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing, just completely out of the ordinary for me.
Have yourself a lovely Sunday. I’m off to get the turkey out of the oven and go get myself some God refreshment today.
Wow Kimmy! You were a busy beaver. If there was one thing I was very thankful for this week was that I didn’t have my old dog wake me up at 5:30 in the morning wanting to be let out.
That spiced brine sounds delicious. I’ll have to try that. I’ve gone through all my leftovers unfortunately.
Hey we did the same thing – made ourselves a meal just for the leftovers
Yummy!
And I can totally relate to living to the dogs schedule. Always when I really want to sleep in too!
